Krav Maga training is part of the standard training for the Israeli Army. This is for good reason – it works in real combat situations. This is especially important for such a volatile place in the world as the Middle East.   Krav Maga began as street fighting skills developed by Imi Litchenfeld. A professional boxer and wrestler, Mr. Litchenfeld found himself in the midst of some anti-Semitic activity in the Jewish quarter of Bratislava in the 1930’s. Later, in the 1940’s when he emigrated to the newly-found nation of Israel, he became the primary instructor of the Israeli Defense Force. And so, Krav Maga became standard training for the Israeli military.   Krav Maga is one of[..]

Aiki Krav Maga Federation and self defense krav maga Ami Niv As it is known, Aiki Krav Maga is developing rapidly throughout the world as a respectable form of martial arts. I'd like to address this letter to you with your undivided attention, both as a senior student of Imi Letenfeld and Elli Avigzar, And as the founder of the Aiki Krav Maga method, which is the third organization that was founded in the world, which also achieved International acknowledgment by the "World Union Martial Arts Federation". Wing Chun has at its core the idea of a middle path or in Taoist philosophy - "taking the middle road". This is a strategy of maintaining balance and avoiding extremes of behaviour and keeping both sides of the "path" in sight. Again the influence of Taoism can be seen here with the concept of "Yin" and "Yang" - the blending of softness with hardness. At its heart Wing Chun is a defensive art which is not that effective against multiple opponents so effective striking and defense is paramount. Let's look at two of the important aspects of Wing Chun Kung fu training. The Centre line theory The centre line theory is one of the most important principles within Wing Chun style - a[..]

Mixed martial arts, is a relatively new way to think about martial arts and competitions. MMA, is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of grappling and striking techniques. In the Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia, MMA, has become increasingly popular. MMA began in Brazil, but came to the United States in 1993. This is when the Ultimate Fighting Championship was developed and broadcast internationally. With the goal of finding the most effective martial arts techniques for unarmed fighting, MMA competitions had martial artists squaring off against each other with minimal rules. They weren't allowed to bite, to fish-hook (such as putting a finger into a mouth or nose), or to[..]

Hartland Karate History of Tang Soo Do The following is a brief history of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan, compiled from the many writings of the Grandmaster of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan, Hwang Kee. The modern martial art of Tang Soo Do is more than 55 years old. It commenced when Grandmaster Hwang Kee began teaching it in Seoul, Korea in the fall of 1945. Hwang Kee mastered Soo Bahk Do and Tae Kyun by the age of 22. Because of the Japanese oppression and ban of Korean Martial Arts at the time, Hwang Kee traveled to northern China in 1936 where he encountered Chinese variations of the martial art of Kung Fu. He combined these with Soo Bahk Do to develop what he would eventually call Tang Soo[..]

Pepper spray, or oleoresin capsicum (OC) can be very effective in helping someone out of a potentially dangerous situation, however possessing a canister of OC and using it improperly could cause more problems than solutions. MOST IMPORTANT: No matter what type of OC spray you own, you must always first be aware of your surroundings. Always have your pepper spray accessible to you in case you need it in an instant. A defense spray is useless if it is in the bottom of a purse, or left in your vehicle. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: The thought that crime only happens at night or in a dark alley is a myth. Can you really learn martial arts from a self defense video? Can you learn anything form a video for that matter. The popularity of Martial Arts and MA Videos has exploded over the last few years. It seems that every where you turn, there is another new video with the latest and greatest techniques. To get you in shape using MA, for self defense or for just learning the sport. A MA video can help you in conjunction with real training. Be it with a partner or by yourself. You will need to practice, practice, practice. It is like anything else that you are learning. If you do not practice you will never get good at it. Now main benefit to working off of a martial arts video is that you can[..]

Some people do not have a chance to attend self defense classes. It cost quite a large amount of money to attend this class but there is always an alternative. Some people choose to watch self defense videos due to time constraint while some people may not be able to afford self defense classes. I believe that self defense videos are just as effective as self defense classes. It depends on the person watching the video and the video itself. Some self defense videos tell you how to attack and how to defend yourself. It is actually up to the individual whether he or she can use the techniques learnt In the videos and apply it when actually facing the real situation. Sometimes people are[..]

If you're thinking about getting a self defense product, you might want to buy a personal alarm. It's not your usual self defense weapon. It won't immobilize an attacker but it can be very effective in stopping an attack by scaring off the attacker. A personal alarm emits a loud sound when you push the button or pull the pin out of the device. The sound can be as loud as 130 decibels. This is loud enough to scare off a potential attacker. The device can come in several sizes and shapes. You can carry it in your pocket, in your purse or you can buy one that goes on your keychain. Since attackers like to sneak up on their victims, the loud alarm will surprise them. The sound is also loud[..]

Though you probably assume that you are safe from violent crimes, unfortunately this is not always the case. Too many people think that criminals only come after "other people," but of course this simply is not true. Don't go through life thinking that such events won't ever happen to you; you won't be prepared for the unfortunate reality that they might. Every second of the day, a violent crime is happening somewhere in the country to someone who thought that crime would never affect them. Start with the basics, or your daily routine. Protect yourself from attack by keeping doors and windows locked, and don't go anywhere alone at night. These strategies are necessary, but alone they[..]

I want to share some important information about how to defend yourself in a street fight. You will learn how to avoid a fight, as well as techniques to use to get the best of your attacker. Martial arts fighting techniques #1 - Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Hone your ability to be aware of people, lighting, places, and potential attackers during your everyday routine. Do not allow yourself to become another statistic who made yourself available to an attack by being ignorant of your surroundings. Martial arts fighting techniques #2 - If you realize an attack is imminent, be the first one to make a move. Firmly state to the attacker, "I don't want problems," while holding[..]

Martial arts moves #1 - Always stay aware at all times. Have you trained in Mixed Martial Arts Bruce Lee style ? In all martial arts including mixed martial arts Bruce Lee identified two of the most important components -- speed and power. Of course, skill is critical but after skill and mastery of that skill, speed and power are the two ultimate dictators of success in any fight. Just what is speed and power? Speed in Mixed Martial Arts Is speed simply how fast you can move your body, hands and feet? Or is there another definition. The fastest martial artists in my mind, was Bruce Lee. The Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is a very new sport. In fact the first UFC or Ultimate Fighting Championship event didn't take place until 1993. Never the less, this sport is growing at an amazing rate, and fighters are joining MMA Competitions now that have backgrounds in a wide array of other Self Defense disciplines, from Muay Thai, Kempo, American Kickboxing and Wrestling. So MMA is a mix of all disciplines and is considered a full contact combat athletic event. Full Contact combat sports events have been recorded as early as 648 BC in the Olympic Games put on by the Greek Pankration. Eventually in the 1800's, England started their own MMA Competitions. People use grappling and[..]

It's hard to disagree with the fact that mixed martial arts is a good sport to train for. MMA training provides excellent physical training and many competitors are in top shape. Mixed martial arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and has large live coverage around many parts of the world. Mixed martial arts fighters are said to be some of the most all rounded of all athletes, as it is imperative that they have strength, agility, flexibility, conditioning at a certain body weight, as well has having "heart," which is slang for the ability to take pain and physical punishment when necessary. Generally consisting of three styles of fighting, including Muay Thai Boxing, Greco Roman Wrestling and Brazilian Ju Jitsu, professional mixed martial arts fighters are often adept in other forms of fighting such as Sambo, Karate and Judo. All of these[..]

I know, the question is a bit bogus, as one should be comparing arts such as Karate and Aikido merely so as to make them compliment each other. Thus, with that statement made, let us discuss how the fist should wiggle into the glove. No pow and bam, just an honest, up front viewpoint for your edification and enlightenment. Karate is commonly touted as a linear martial arts, and Aikido is supposed to be designed for circular techniques. Yet, if one seriously analyzes arts such as Karate one will see that perfection of linearity is loose, at best. If Karate was truly linear, considering how the bones, joints, muscles and so on all depend on each other, the body would probably explode, or,[..]

Kempo Karate, also known as Kenpo, is one of the most popular forms of Karate that was developed in the West. The word kempo means law of the fist, and this form of martial arts has long been regarded as a combination art for the fact that it involves the use of hard fist (Karate Do), soft fist (Ju Jitsu) and weapons (Kobudo). On the most basic, Kempo Karate teaches sparring and sparring drills for one particular purpose to help the students learn and understand the fundamental movements as well as the application of the kicking and punching combinations. This is actually where the Kempo Karate sparring techniques come in. Well, the sparring techniques can be classified according to[..]

Honestly, black-belts are literally given away today like candy! Believe this fact, there are thousands of "black-belt" martial artists that would die in a real street fight! Mixed martial arts (MMA) is one of the best choices for fight training as it encompasses the most useful techniques from different disciplines. Here's some of the best ways to train for mixed martial arts: MMA Fight Schools/Gyms - You can't beat getting hands on training. Not only learning and performing specific skill and technique from experienced teachers, but also putting those moves into practice with a sparring partner. The problem is that MMA gyms are fairly new. Traditional self defense and martial arts schools only focus on one or two particular disciplines. You could say I'm an old-timer when it comes to MMA. And I guess I've been doing the MMA workout routine for about 10 years. Craig was teaching BJJ in Red Bank New Jersey. he had just recently formed an alliance with Renzo Gracie and they were selling their training tapes in Black Belt Magazine. Unfortunately like most people that start out in BJJ - you find out that your conditioning and stamina stinks. So I sought out a better way to perform my MMA workout routine. This elaborates the whole idea of engagement of all the physical and mental parts of a human body to be used in a disciplinary way to enhance fitness and spirit via training. Muay Thai Kickboxing is often referred to as the science of 8 limbs. The reason for this title is the fact that you use nearly every body part as a weapon. You can strike with your forehead, elbows, fists, Knees, Shins and feet. Muay Thai Kickboxing was invented over 2000 years ago and is recognized as one of the oldest martial arts known to man. Although records of Muay Thai fights only date back to 700 years ago, there is a general consensus that Muay Thai originated over 2000 years ago in the part of Asia that is now inhabited by China. Most times arts don't fit together. You take the circular hands of kenpo and try to put them atop the linear stances of shotokan, and you are going to get an uncoordinated mish mash. Or, the jabs of boxing might fit with wing chun, but the round house power punches don't fit at all. And, of course, there are exceptions to the rule. You can put aikido together with pa kua chang, but it is going to take logic and discipline to categorize individual techniques. And, this leaves the developer with a problem of how do you teach the beast without confusing. That all said, one day I was in an Aikido class, I was a beginner in Aikido, though I had seven years of kenpo and karate and a dabble of[..]

I just finished reading "Complete Krav Maga" by Darren Levine and John Whitman for the second time in as many weeks and I have to say that it is a very well done book covering the basic techniques needed to advance through the ranks of Krav Maga from yellow belt all the way up to and including brown belt. However, having said that, it should be noted that as the author so firmly states, "Krav Maga is not a martial art, it is a form of self-defense." I only have one small complaint with this book and that is that in one respect, it is no different from the vast majority of books out there that try and teach you too many things in one volume and don't spend enough time on each individual[..]

People have been picking up sticks to beat each other since time immemorial, but the joong bong, the Korean Middle staff, is something really special in the world of martial arts. This is the most commonly taught weapon in the Korean martial art of Kuk Sul Won, though tournaments and ease of use have brought the joong bong into other arenas, like Tae Kwon Do. The best self defense is one that can be used successfully by the average person. While you may feel weak and vulnerable, your potential attacker also has weaknesses. The best self defense plan never assumes nor is surprised by anything. You do whatever it takes to win, because your life could depend upon it. When someone thinks of self defense, they might envision a few martial arts techniques. I'm not sure if you have ever seen anyone actually implementing martial arts, but it's a lot different than it looks on kung fu theater. Martial arts these days are kind of funny. There's three broad groups you'll find each with it's own peculiar quirks. You have the old school, traditional martial arts (TMA) for whom preserving and passing on a complete way of life is important. Forms, etiquette and rank tend to feature highly as do making your moves look so nice. You get combat sports, like mixed martial arts, kick boxing and Olympic style tae kwon do which generally do a great job for your conditioning but within the rules of the sport. Then you have the 'reality based' purely real world combat oriented stuff that typically strips out as much as possible that doesn't do the job leaving you with a much smaller toolkit[..]

It’s easy to see where boxing leaves off and Mixed Martial Arts begins. Just one look at the UFC octagon, steel cage and frantic crowds and you instantly know that MMA is a world apart from the boxing your grandfather once told you about.  This is the world where different combat styles pit themselves against the rest to determine which one remains supreme. It’s a brutal sport where the will to fight has always been bigger than the will to bring home a dollar. While it may all be well and good to choose your martial arts clothing for the fashion sense, the most important aspect of choosing it is for the particular martial arts style.  Different styles come from different locations around the world, and some of the countries involved have had antagonistic relationships over the centuries. So you are thinking about starting training and wondered if you can just buy a few martial arts books and learn from them? Well the short answer is unfortunately not really. Although you could learn a few techniques and exercises, martial arts training does require a human instructor give you feedback in order to ensure you are performing those techniques correctly to avoid injury. Martial Arts Books are definitely not a waste of money though. When used in conjunction with classes they can help supplement your training. I studied martial arts for many years, and I have decided that raising toddlers is the best possible training in conflict management. As anyone that has studied martial arts (or watched Karate Kid) knows, classic martial arts are about conflict management first, and fighting second. You are supposed to avoid conflict at all costs - avoid doing harm. Only under the most dire circumstances are you justified in using your art. The inner self-awareness and control required to do this is partially how martial arts and spirituality became linked. Mixed Martial Arts, as we know it today, was developed from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, starting in 1993.  The UFC was formed initially to discover the ultimate fighting style, which led to various hybrids of older fighting traditions.  However, the concept of mixing fighting styles in combat situations is much older than the UFC. It can be said that the search for the ultimate fighting technique predates history, as even the apes use unarmed combat.  The earliest documented accounts of mixed fighting styles we have is from the Olympics held in Greece in 648 BC, then called the pankration.  This later developed into the Etruscan and Roman pancratium, as showcased in[..]

Self defense weapons fall into two broad categories, lethal and nonlethal.
