Have you ever seen two martial artists practicing with sticks? The speed of the hits is almost blindingly fast. This is the kind of martial arts practice that many practitioners crave. For example, my students get very fast at the single stick patterns. (Double sticks, too.) Their hits are precise -- they enter at the same angle each and every time. It almost looks choreographed. That's awful! Why? It doesn't mimic real life. Unrealistic Martial Arts Practice You and I both know that the bad guy is not going to swing at the perfect angle with just the right timing, in a real-life situation. (Maybe if we could teach the attacker which angles we preferred, the encounter would progress more smoothly...

Whether you're a gun-control advocate, a member of the NRA, or you don't have any particular like or dislike for firearms, the fact remains that, as long as criminals have access to them, you may find yourself in a self-defense situation where you will have to deal with them.   I have lots of friends who take martial arts or study self-defense. As I should, since this is what I do - it's the world in which I live.   Not surprising.   But what is surprising is the number of them who don't want to train with, think about, or deal with guns. Now, I can understand not liking guns, In the wrong hands, they are very dangerous things. I can also understand not liking baseball bats, knives, and nunchuks...

Warrior Mindset in Self Defense

A famous author Jerry VanCook says that successful self defense is the result of approximately 99% psychological and 1% training. Survival should be the primary and focal point of every risky situation. The warrior spirit is more important than polished technique. It teaches a person to act immediately and escape if he/she is attacked. It also teaches a person to never give up. The most essential components of the warrior mindset are: - Toughness - Immediate Response - Focus These components are discussed in detail below: Toughness There are two types of toughness, mental and physical. Both mental and physical toughness means being absolutely ruthless and malicious in your self defense. The...

When some people say that it is imperative to have a proper self defense to tackle any kind of situation, some people just laugh at them and ignore the factor of learning the self defense tricks and tactics of self defense straight away by saying that neither we have enemies nor we feel danger from anyone. But you should not take notice of their comments seriously. Some people are wise enough that they learn the tricks and techniques of their self defense at very early age before they take their first step in the professional life. So whenever they find an opponent or a defending situation they do not find it difficult to deal with the attacker. They are very skillful and efficient in their...

Did you know that using the spiciness of peppers for self-defense actually dates back centuries? Although modern aerosol cans of pepper spray were developed only in the past several decades, using peppers for self-defense actually dates as far back as ancient Japan, China, and India. Ground up cayenne peppers was often used to blind one's enemies and immobilize attackers. In these cultures, this use of peppers was seen as acceptable for self defense because the peppers cause no lasting harm. In other ancient communities, such as in Japan, a box of chili powder was often blown into the eyes of someone convicted of a crime. Modern pepper spray could not develop from these ideas until the invention of...

The idea of a walking stick as a cane, or some sort of aid for walking, is a very recent one. Unsurprisingly, a remnant of a more violent culture has been co-opted, and now we have beautifully cared and ornate walking sticks for young and old, men and women, hikers and casual walkers. But in the not so distant past, walking sticks had a very different purpose. In fact, walking sticks were used as weapons. And that's not a surprising revelation. How could it be? Irish walking sticks are tall, they are heavy, and they used to be stuffed with lead! Other walking sticks were made from very knotty, very rough, very strong wood. This would increase the amount of damage inflicted on the unwary attacker in...

Stress is a problem that exploded during the 20th century and which covers a multitude of different symptoms. It is normally the result of too much pressure being applied to an individual. There is no such thing as "good" stress; rather, people's lives are enriched by being put under certain levels of pressure, which enables them to move out of their comfort zones, and grow as people. Without pressure, everyone's lives would simply roll along in endless boredom and more likely than not, also be a health risk, perhaps leading to depression. When the pressure gets too much, or the recipient feels they have been cornered - figuratively speaking - the pressure then becomes stress. So if you are a...

If you are a serious student of martial arts then you will want to diversify your training skills. The best way to do this is by joining training camps. Many of these camps provide the best training for beginners as well as veterans of the art. Going to these camps does not mean you have failed to learn certain moves and are being punished by being sent to the training camp. It is not like summer school, however it is a great place to receive more training to the already gathered knowledge of martial arts that you might have. When you come back from these camps, you usually feel more relaxed and much more in shape then you would have if you had stayed behind. Training is a vital part of martial arts...

How many times have you found yourself in an argument you didn’t want to be in? You were somehow drug into an argument about something you couldn’t care less about, and now you don’t know how to get out of it and move on. There are three fundamental elements to effective verbal self defense: First, listening without leaping to conclusions. That takes practice! Often when people start talking to us our mind is zooming off on its own tangent- predicting the next words before they are even out of their mouth. Second, try to understand what’s really going on. When someone attacks you verbally, try to not react in the same manner. Stay calm, let it roll off of you. Is this someone familiar to you...

The use of keys in self defense situations has become a practical and easy way for people to feel a little more secure when walking to there vehicles late at night, or when walking around in general. This is due to the fact that the item that they are holding is not illegal. People feel very comfortable holding keys in plain view, and if trouble comes their way they have a weapon they can use to protect themselves with. The unfortunate issue when it comes to using your keys in self defense situations is that 90% of the time the person using them fails and becomes a victim, due to a lack of knowledge on how to properly hold their keys for self defense purposes. Many people walk around with a false...

As a weapon of self defense, protective walking canes are second to none. While there are several different types of self protection devices designed to help a potential victim defuse a violent encounter, most of them have inherent flaws that render them ineffective in an actual attack. Take for instance mace sprays or pepper sprays. Theoretically, these sound perfect for fending off an attacker; however, to be effective, you have to make sure you aim the spray directly into the face. In a real life skirmish, this is almost impossible. The gun, another popular self-protection device, is loaded (pun intended) with drawbacks. For one thing, it is illegal to carry a gun without a license. Even if you...

If you want to be up and running with your training center on day one, you need to know what gear is best for your location, gear that does not take a week to install. There is an easy solution when it comes to safety flooring as you can choose multiple interlocking EVA foam martial arts mats (often known as jigsaw mats or puzzle mats). Simply measure the length and width of your floor and divide each by the size of the mats you have chosen to purchase. It is okay to have mats that go over the edge as you can easily cut one edge of the mats to fit perfectly. With interlocking jigsaw puzzle mats, you can add them to a dojo (training or fitness center) floor the day they arrive. What I love about...

It's a very simple process to achieve speed in punching and kicking once you know some basics on how this process is done. Karate students tend to make key mistakes that prevents this natural speed from occurring in their training. I will show you a step by step solution to eliminate this problem. But first I have to tell you about why karate students can't achieve speed in their punches and kicks: 1. They tend to tense up their muscles right from the start of the punch or kick. This action will freeze up the muscle speed and you won't be able to achieve the ultimate speed. 2. They tend to just think of speed in their minds. Concentrating on speed won't necessarily give you more speed. Now let me...

Sanchin is a Kata in Karate and Kata is a Japanese word for a set of Patterned movements, which basically consists of a series of kicks, punches and throws. In essence it's a form which a person practice's slowly and powerfully. In the form you are trying to imitate the characteristics of a tree. In making yourself like a tree you are rooting yourself to the spot. Keep your back straight when doing Sanchin. Your legs should be the roots of the tree and your arms the branches of the tree. In some styles of Karate everything comes from the Kata Sanchin. Sanchin form has within it a fighting system, all the elements of a fight are in it. This form basically consists of moving forward three steps and...

The old methods of training your movements and techniques for thousands of times won't necessarily improve your reflex in karate. The reason that it doesn't work is because they are focusing on the wrong end of the problem. Karate students must do repetitions but it isn't doing 100 thousand repetitions that will create the perfect reflex in training or during competition. If that was the answer then why is it that millions of karate students don't have great reflex actions? The answer is they don't know what the secret is and they are just following the methods that never really work and will never work. So what is the answer? Is it going to see the masters? I know what the answer is and I will give...

I will explain one of the several techniques on how any karate student can have the perfect mind set to enable him or her to achieve perfect execution in any movement or technique. First I have to tell you a little story that will explain how mind set and/or mental focus works. During a seminar I asked the students to focus and try to remember everything that was the color black in the room for 30 seconds. After I told them to close their eyes and to tell me everything that was brown in the same room as they had focused before. Now they were a bit confused and felt a little betrayed... When they opened their eyes I told them the reason they could remember more things that were black vs. brown in the...

Karate competitions take place on a national, international, and local level. Locally, dojos close to each other will get together to have informal sparring competitions. This is often combined with black belt testing, as there need to be 3 high-degree black belts present to pass the honor onto other students. There are three parts in competition: kata, or the series of movements used to display known skills; katas and other form movements with weaponry; and sparring with a partner. The World Karate Federation is the largest organized group. The International Olympic Committee accepts their rules as international standard. WKF does not have a weapons competition. Competitive sparring is a great way...

Normally, someone new to Karate classes will attend one session per week in the beginning, as the student progresses this will obviously increase. I personally recommend training one karate for beginners session per week for the first three to six months, after this, a minimum of two lessons per week is essential. There is so much to learn and practice, if after six months you are only training one session per week, not only will your progress be slow, you will also struggle to keep up with others in your class and because you will struggle there is a good chance you will become disillusioned. These numbers obviously vary from person to person, we have members who go straight into unlimited training...

A karate class usually consists of kihon, kumite and kata. Kihon translates as basics or fundamentals and in karate classes across the world, refers to the practice of the basic karate techniques. So a typical karate class would start of with basic punches, strikes, blocks and kicks. Normally starting of with single techniques, then progressing to combinations. Working through the shotokan belt system, the kihon starts with single techniques, like oizuki (stepping punch), then after a few belts, the kihon progresses to combinations like sanbonzuki (three punches), then at brown belt, the kihon enters the semi freestyle range, where techniques are snapped back, instead of held out. Kumite means...

This is one of the most neglected parts of karate practice and it is a part of karate that you ignore at your peril. Not only is stretching healthy, it also helps prevent injury during karate classes. Stretching should be practiced before and after your karate lessons. My sensei said to me, 'the only time your whole body is stiff, is when you are dead!" and he is absolutely correct. Keeping the body soft and supple should be a priority for all karateka. But before you start stretching, it is very important to warm the body up. An example could be, gently shaking the legs and arms, gently swinging the arms, walking slowly, then speeding the walk up and finally into a slow jog. Obviously this is just...

Each format has a different history and was developed in different places as well as at different times. Street Fighter Versus a Boxer Imagine a street fighter against a boxer. Or even some trained in a more classical martial arts against someone versed in boxing. Once the boxer gets to an infighting range, some feel that the fight is all over. How would you deal with someone pounding your midsection from a very close range -- maybe even clinching, to prevent you from escaping? For some, the obvious answer to the above problem would be to prevent your attacker from getting too close in the first place. If he or she can't get to an infighting distance, then the boxer's punches will never get close enough to make contact, right? In fact, you might even be able to use your "secret weapons" -- your kicks...

Some of the more classic texts on martial arts missed the mark with their strategies. For example, some of the advice for dealing with multiple attackers in a street fight could get you hurt or killed. How many texts have advised that you head to a wall, if multiple attackers try to attack? Their theory is that you have your back protected, if you have it close to a wall. I couldn't disagree more. You have cut off your mobility. You have eliminated any timing for distance maneuvers. You can't retreat to set your attackers up for interrupted counters. Even Worse than Wall Protection Against Multiple Attackers These misguided texts really fail our needs when they counsel their readers to, are you...

Self Defense - The Act of Protecting One's Self

Self defense is the act of protecting one's self against physical force or the immediate threat of force. It can justify conduct which would otherwise give rise to criminal or civil liability. It can operate as a defense to virtually any criminal or civil wrong which involves the use or threat of physical force, such as assault, battery, and homicide. To successfully argue self defense in a trial for homicide, the defendant must show that he or she acted with a genuine belief that they were in danger of death or severe bodily harm, that their conduct was necessary to prevent that harm, and that a reasonable person in the same situation would have had the same belief, and acted in a similar manner...

Self defense is a force that is used to when a person believes that it is necessary for the defense of himself or his property. The person might use this force to prevent any unlawful force that is implied on him. Force causes body harm and even death, but it is justified if used as a measure of self defense. There are certain criteria which hold the rightness of the use of self defense against such force. 1. The right of Self Defense: Whenever a threat is implied on the victim, the victim should first make sure to avoid such threats. Secondly, if this fails, the victim should react to the situation by implying force to force which in certain case is not possible. Normally the force implied by the...

Movies are very different from real life situations. In movies, characters tend to fight back when they are attacked. Unfortunately movies don't always show what could happen in real life. If ever find yourself in a situation where your life is on the line, you should try as much as possible to avoid aggravating your attacker. You have to calm down and try to get away from your attacker as quick as possible. Of course prevention is always better than cure. Try to avoid any situation in which your safety can be compromised. Use and trust your instinct. If you feel that something is not right the chances are you're right. If you don't feel right going with a person somewhere then don't. Don't think...

One of the goals of a good martial arts curriculum is progress. Regardless of the style you have chosen to study, all of them begin with the fundamentals and can take you to the level of mastery. Success however depends on two things: commitment on your part and a skilled instructor who not only teaches you the art, but also challenges you. To some, progression in the martial arts is about earning another belt or stripe. The space between these belts and stripes however is where the martial artist makes his real gains. This is where all the hard work takes place. In addition to learning the new techniques required by your style's curriculum, you will be tested physically and mentally. Increasing...

How much control do you exert over your physiology when you train? Have you ever asked yourself this question? I mean deeply thought about how much control you have over your techniques? We left the store, and I asked my wife, "Did you hear what that old lady said?" "How could I," answered my wife. "She was speaking in Chinese." The old lady had spoken in her old tongue, and I had heard her in English. In essence, I had peered into her mind and perceived her thoughts in my language. It was a tournament. A group of different fighters from different countries and backgrounds would show up and draw who they would be fighting in the first round. The winners would go on to the second round and so on until there was only one fighter left. ...I know, you must be thinking I've completely gone off track here... but keep reading and I'll explain... One fighter stood out among all of them. He was the champion for three years in a row, defeating three men in one night each time. He was tall, skinny, and lanky...

Without a doubt, one of the most important and sometimes overlooked techniques is the outward forearm block. It is this block that is commonly used as a means of defending against punches and kicks, but there is much more to it than simply swinging the forearm. There is a great deal of precision required for the block to work properly and paying attention to some of the finer points found in the form will reveal many of these details First, the context of an 'in to out' forearm block needs to be clarified. While many books and magazines depict this block as a means of defending against a straight punch, its primary purpose is to deflect attacks that come from the side flank or at a diagonal angle...

I wanna say a lot of people out there do not like Taekwondo, but it teaches great balance and quick foot strikes. In fact a true pro at this fighting style can kick faster then most people can punch. They also teach some pretty good grappling techniques (While standing). The punches are fast and resemble a boxers. This is used well to set up kicks. They also teach a good weapon defense, how to take knives, sticks, etc. The best part I must say though is the added flexibility. I could easily kick over my own head after a month. However, even though the hand techniques to resemble boxers, the defense does not. Your hands are often to low to protect your face if the person has a better hand technique...
