Learn Savate Style Self Defense
Like many of the other arts of unarmed combat, the origin of Savate is lost in past ages. In the beginning man fought without weapons, using just his hands and feet as means of attacking and defending. Although Savate is primarily the art of foot fighting, the hands do play a part in this technique. The use of the hands to fight as a sport can be traced back over five thousand years. During the Greek era, hand fighting, or as we know it, boxing, flourished through the use of gloves with metal spikes. In the Roman age, metal-spiked gloves were replaced by gloves of hard leather. The combination of boxing and foot fighting, or Savate, into a systemized art is recent, about 125 years old. During the...
Top 5 Reasons Why Tim Sylvia Will Defeat Randy Couture
Sometimes in life we need to take a step back, ignore our hearts and go with our heads. UFC 68 on March 3rd, in Columbus Ohio is one of those times. Randy Couture is 6'1", 205 pounds (probably 10 or 15 heavier for this fight and is 43 years old. Almost everyone I know wants Randy to defeat Tim Sylvia, but they are thinking with their hearts, not their heads. I am also guilty of wanting a couture victory. Sure, Randy, do it for us old guys. Show those big young lads that there is still a little steam left in the over 40 crowd...

Yet, changing it would make us feel awkward and strange. We basically perform our daily actions the same way every single day. It starts from the time we wake up. The way we squeeze the...

Why do we Call these People Black Belts?
Many are surprised that Six Sigma refers to their trained experts as "Belts." There are Green Belts and Black Belts in Six Sigma, referring to a level of training they have achieved. The term Black Belt is not an empty buzzword nor is it a mockery of organized martial arts. Comparing a Six Sigma Black Belt and Martial Arts Black Belt is a revealing exercise. Just like in martial arts, to obtain a Black Belt in Six Sigma requires training that teaches skills and discipline. A Black Belt in both martial arts and Six Sigma is a designation that is not given way or can be bought "off the shelf;" it is something that is earned through hard work. Also like in martial arts, achieving Black Belt level is...

How I Discovered Tai Chi
Once in a while, I get really bored with my workouts. You know, after a while it gets to be the same old, same old stuff. It is always weights or cardio machines or the same stuff over and over again. I have worked out for years and sometimes it is nice to have something different to sink your teeth into when you go to the gym. Or it is also nice to have something fun and invigorating to do at home. Something that gets you started off on the right foot in the morning. I recently found something that fits that criteria and it is called Tai Chi. You may have heard of it. It has been around for centuries. Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art but different from regular sparring types of kung fu. Some people...
How to Use Video to Learn Martial Arts
The greatest martial arts legends lived before video existed--masters who allegedly could knock down opponents with their chi or, with a flick of a finger, could knock a large opponent twenty feet. One legend tells of a young student who wanted to learn a form (also called "kata") from a master. According to the legend, the master performed the sequence of movements one time, turned to the student and said, "I will be back in one year. At that time, you should have mastered this form!" One year later, the master returned and the student had, in fact, mastered the movements. And he didn't even have a DVD player! In the 35 years that I've studied and taught martial arts, I've never seen anyone--even...

Passport To Better Health And Lifetime Fitness
Learning a few great tai chi moves is the passport to better health and lifetime fitness. Tai chi is not about being macho and bullying your boyfriend or husband when they upset you. It is more than that, and learning the technique is not to show your little brother who bullied you for ever that you are now the boss, but also teaches you self-discipline. When I was young I used to be into my movies from Hong Kong and watching my favorite actor fly through the air as if he had wings and then soft-land on his enemy's head. He would just stand there and his enemy would look around for him. Only after a few stomps to the crown of the enemy's head, will he then realize that Jet Li was there. To learn tai...
Ahmedabad - Gajanand Rajput Gives the Impression That He Wouldn't Hurt a Fly. But Looks are Deceptive
AHMEDABAD - Gajanand Rajput gives the impression that he wouldn't hurt a fly. But looks are deceptive. Behind the placid demeanour is a man who can take down bullies twice his size with a single punch. Rajput (28) is a 35th generation Shaolin Temple warrior disciple, the only Indian at that. He was trained at the Shaolin temple in Henan, China and even bore a Chinese name, Shi Heng Chang, meaning 'Long time relative', bestowed on him by his Master. The first generation of warrior monks began practising Wushu in the 11th century AD. The cult was outlawed after the monks started a revolution in China with their unbelievable fighting skills, as Shaolin Kung-Fu achieved notoriety. "I began practising...
You paid good money to join a health club and what did you get in return? Having to put your name on a sign-in sheet just to use the cardio machines, televisions blasting, cleaning up sweat off of some piece of equipment because the person who previously used it didn't have the courtesy to wipe it down. A singles club atmosphere complete with uninvited attention, waiting to use the free weights because some clown is spending way too much time primping in front of the mirror? This is hardly a refuge for most busy men and women looking to get fit! Have you ever considered the martial arts alternative? Many adults are disgusted with the run-of-the-mill fitness centers and have looked to the martial...
Boredom Buster Healthy Workout
Are you a type A, go getter, do ten things at once type of person? Do you get bored easily with the same old-same old? Want to know the best way to combat that boredom and bring your health and fitness to a new level? I spent years trying different healthy workouts beginning with aerobics. It began in college during the Jane Fonda years when I followed the lead of the girls in my sorority. We put a video tape in the VCR, moved the coffee table out of the way and proceeded to jump, bump and squeeze our way into shape. This was followed, post-college, by aerobics classes at the gym where I wore cute little leotards and colored tights. I could admire myself in the mirrored wall while following the...

The Definition of MMA
MMA or Mixed Martial Arts is the only sport that combines all of the most effective martial arts. It is the case since fighters have to use the art to win rather than to train. The sport was first introduced by Rorion Gracie who brought it up from Brazil in the 1980's. MMA is a growing sport and will get more popular with time. The idea of mixing different fighting techniques in one competition was born in the 1920's and originated in martial arts tournaments in Brazil. Japan has created several MMA like events such as Pride and K-1. The idea of combining different fighting styles gained popularity overseas in the 1970's as famous martial artist Bruce Lee embraced the idea of combining different...
What A Black Belt Means To Me - The Journey
It's often said in Martial Arts that the meaning doesn't lie in how good you are or what belt you have, rather the meaning lies in the journey. Before I get into "What Black Belt Means To Me", I would like to talk about my journey of these past few months. The Journey Last week I had flown to Nashville to test for my long awaited San Dan (3rd degree Black Belt – This is kind of like becoming an official "Teacher"). Prior to the test I had been training consistently since April of this year at a friends dojo and my local gym. It had been about 5 years since I've last practiced my discipline, Wado-Ryu Karate-Do, so my recollection of the system was very vague. After watching numerous tapes of...

Thismoney can be earned simply by becoming a better negotiator, yet most people in the United States rarely take advantageof the power of bargaining, except on rare occasions whenmaking large purchases like cars and houses. In othercountries, like Asia, people there negotiate everythingeveryday and save thousands. Negotiating is like a martial arts contest where power, leverage and timing can mean the difference between winningand losing. For instance, a martial artist would never gointo a contest without first spying on his opponent to findweaknesses. In the...

Taekwondo - General Background
Taekwondo is derived from several martial arts with the main influence being tae-kyon - Korean kick fighting. "Tae" means to kick. "Kwon" means to strike using the hand, in most cases the fist. "Do" refers to the way of the art, like in the examples of Hapkido, Karate-do, Ninjado etc. Thus, the foundation of the art is the use of the hands and feet to overcome an attacker swiftly. History: Taekwondo was originally developed in Korea in the 1950s, when a group of leading martial arts exponents came together to unify their respective disciplines under a single fighting system. The inauguration took place in South Korea on April 11, 1955, with Major-General Choi Hong Hi, a 9th dan black belt, being...

Drawing and Moving Energy
During various exercises we'll be drawing energy in through our chakras, into our organs and even through the entire area of our skin. Drawing energy into yourself is fairly easy to do and simply requires a heightened sense of self-awareness to feel. To begin drawing energy just take a moment and focus on your breathing. Feel your breath as it flows in through your nostrils and down to your Dan Tien, the area two finger-widths below your belly button. Feel the chi as it flows in with your breath down to your Dan Tien. Take a few breaths and let the energy build up and spread through your body. Now, as silly as it sounds, imagine a nose or an opening that covers your heart chakra, just over your...
